11:33 pm

Dov waved the fob to open the gate at the Anders estate and drove the short distance to the house, pulling into the crescent shaped drive. He backed up to the garage and, as he turned off the engine, he heard a muffled moan from the backseat. Dov glanced over his shoulder to see Suzanne wince as she moved to unbuckle her seatbelt.

“Everything okay?”

“Mmmhmm. Just a bit stiff from those godawful banquet chairs,” Suzanne said.

Dov exited the car and opened her door, but Suzanne just sat there, her hands limp in her lap.

She took a deep breath and gave her head a little shake. “Whew. I guess my party days really are over.” She swiveled in her seat, started to stand, then hesitated.

Dov reached down. “Here, let me help,” he said, holding out his hand.

Without looking up, Suzanne put her hand in his, and leaned into it. As she stood, Dov put his hand on the small of her back to steady her.

How could he tell her . . . everything? Would she be offended? Outraged? Amused at his clumsy confession? It didn’t matter. Tonight might be his only chance to finally confide his feelings. This was his moment.

Unless she’s too tired.

Either way, he would tend to Suzanne, make sure she was okay and tucked in for the night. Then, it was time to bring this shit show to a head. He would avenge her in the only way he could, short of challenging Anders to a duel or a fist fight. Dov knew he could easily take Anders if it came to blows, but he had a better idea of how to bring Anders down, and it wouldn’t take so much as one swing to do it.

From the outset, Dov had had his suspicions about Chris Fischer’s story that he needed to review video from a client meeting. As Fischer crowded in behind him, it had made Dov uncomfortable and impatient. As soon as Dov entered his password, he got a whiff of what Fischer was up to. But he wasn’t about to make a fuss without investigating first. After Fischer left, but
